About American Maglev Technology

Based in Amelia Island, Florida, American Maglev Technology (AMT) was founded in 1994 by Tony Morris and Kent R. Davey, Ph.D. The company works on a variety of advanced technologies, from transit propulsion and solid-state braking to hydropower generation and superconducting magnetic energy storage.

The company has invested millions of dollars in research and development of its advanced technologies. Examples of projects the company has worked on include Magnetic Braking and electric Tax for aircraft, Passive Cooling for Aircraft Carrier Jet Blast Deflectors, and Alternative Track Braking Mechanisms for the Department of Defense's hypersonic missile test tracks.

A Conversation with AMT's VP of Operations

Jordan Morris, Vice President of Operations of American Maglev Technology and a customer of Atomus sat down for an interview to share his experience with the Atomus product. Below are Jordan's responses to the questions we asked him.

What Drove Your Need for a Compliance Solution?

The impetus for it was a contract that had NIST 800-171 cybersecurity requirements. The contract was one of the largest our company had ever competed for, and we faced the challenge of complying with these cybersecurity requirements. So, we started a search to learn about the cybersecurity requirements and the costs involved. After some initial research, we thought complying with these requirements was out of our reach.

What Were You Looking for in a Solution?

As a company, we were looking to secure our data and comply with NIST 800-171. Part of keeping our company data safe meant moving to the Government Cloud, which Atomus made extremely easy. Another advantage of the Atomus product is how security is integrated behind the scenes. For example, as a small business, we handle everything primarily through email. One amazing feature Atomus has is automatic email encryption, which helps protect our company's intellectual property and ensures compliance with these cybersecurity requirements. To decrypt the email, the recipient must be on a list of authorized users or get a one-time access code from the sender. The fantastic thing about this is it happens automatically anytime I send an email, given how integrated Atomus' solution is.

How Is the Experience of Using Aegis Day to Day?

The team told us that the user experience would feel the same as it did before Aegis, and it has. I'm trying to think of some examples, but everything feels the same. Other than having to reinstall some drivers for a mouse and printer, which is what you would expect for any new system, everything just popped right back up where it was. So, there was no downtime, which we were really impressed with.

What Made Atomus' Product Stand Out?

Atomus Aegis stood out because it's an all-in-one compliance solution. It had everything from backups to VPNs, health check scans, and cybersecurity training. NIST 800-171 has 110 cybersecurity controls, and before Atomus, it was challenging to go through the process and piece all the different components together. But with Atomus fully integrating everything from my email, computer, and the dozens of other services running within Aegis, just look at Aegis instead of dozens of different places.

Did Industry Trends Play a Role in Addressing Compliance?

Our company has been in business for 30 years, so we've been in the industry for a while. A lot of cybersecurity and compliance is about keeping up with fellow companies in the industry. We've seen many of our fellow small businesses struggle with cybersecurity and compliance. In order to stay competitive, we had to invest in NIST 800-171 cybersecurity and compliance.

Choosing Atomus

American Maglev Technology made the decision to go with Atomus, reducing the time, cost, and headache of complying with cybersecurity requirements on their own. They were able to increase trust with their customers and continue to grow their military sales.

"We were told that the user experience would feel exactly the same as what we were doing before Aegis. And it's been exactly that."
